NCAA College Football: History of the California Golden Bears
The California Golden Bears men’s football team is located at the University of California, Berkeley.
In the Pac – 10 conference, the California Golden Bears play and play all of their home games in the California memorial stadium. They have been football betting lines favorites since ages. The team also has a total of 5 national championships and 14 titles in their conference. In 1982, they have a rich history of winning the “Big Game”. In the game, the team won the game with a kickoff return that included 5 laterals.
In 1886, the men’s football team originated. Ever since 1915, the University has had a team and look forward to have many more years of good football.
The California Golden Bears were unstoppable in the 1920’s. In the five-year period from 1920 to 1925, they had a streak of 50 straight wins and they are third in the NCAA to go this far without being beaten. Andy Smith was the coach over these teams.
In 1929, in college history, the California Golden Bears were also part of one of the most infamous plays. To a blocked punt and a safety, it was in the Rose Bowl where the match ended up losing the game.
The team struggled to find the same success they had in earlier decades, from the 60′s to the 80′s. 1980′s were especially bad. The California Golden Bears again returned to an elite status and Fast forward to the 1990′s.
Most recently, early in the 2009 season the team did well but struggled being consistent throughout the season. They failed to get over 1000 rushing yards for any running back for the first time in 7 years and they have also struggled having a consistent running back. In the coaching staff, there were some changes and the team looks much more improved in 2010 season.
